Fun with Flash Fiction!
A few months ago, I signed up to participate in the NYC Midnight Flash Fiction Challenge. Participants were assigned a genre, location and object and given 48 hours to submit a story of 1,000 words of fewer. My assignment was: sci-fi (genre), cemetery (location) and elephant tusk (object). I don’t consider myself a “traditional” sci-fi writer, so I was intimidated by my assignment. There’s a scene in the film version of Alice Walker’s “The Color Purple” where Celie spots Miss Sofia in the general store. After Pentecost, then what?
Yesterday was Pentecost, the day that Christians commemorate the pouring out of the Holy Spirit (as told in the book of Acts) and celebrate the birth of the Church. My church has been walking through the book of Acts during our Wednesday night Bible class. We spent a good deal of time developing an understanding of the Holy Spirit’s interactions with the New Testament Church.
